English, Oral Communications and Senior Project

ALL SENIORS:

Senior Project: We reviewed, on Monday, the agenda for the rest of the school year. The seniors have a very busy schedule; therefore, trying to fit everything in is a challenge. Here is an update of what we discussed, with regards to their senior projects:

  • Friday, March 15th: Outlines due. Here is the outline template I handed out. The outlines do not have to be full sentences, they may be topical in nature. This outline is required to help students organize their thoughts and force the procrastinators to begin.
    • I will pass the graded outlines back to students before spring break (March 29th – April 5). This way students will have this time to work on their research paper.
  • Friday, April 19th: Research papers are due.
    • I will work on grading/reviewing their papers while some of the students are in Alaska (April 26th – May 6th). Once students return I will hand back papers with any corrections that need to be made.
  • Thursday, April 25th: Research abstract due to Mrs. Knechtel
  • Week of May 13th: All classes will practice, in front of their peers, their senior project presentations.
  • Tuesday, May 21st: Senior Project Presentation night!

Oral Communication (OCU):

  • Monday: Reviewed the agenda for the rest of the school year, with regards to their oral com speeches.
    • Week of March 11th: Devotional Speeches
      • Dates were assigned to each student on Friday March 8th
    • Week of March 18th: Informative/Demonstrative Speeches
    • Week of April 15th: Persuasive Speeches
  • Tuesday: We began a very fun activity with “Dove” chocolate. Students were able to first hand see how much an outline helps them prepare a speech/paper.
  • Wed: Snow Day!
  • Thursday: Will continue “Dove” speeches and complete chapter 9 quiz (that was scheduled for Wed)
  • Friday: Finished “Dove” speeches

English 12:

  • Monday: Reviewed the schedule for senior project. I went over the proper procedures for an outline.  Purdue OWL – Writing Lab is full of great resources to help with outlines, citing sources and writing a research paper.
  • Tuesday: Topic forms were due. This assignment was handed out last week and it asked students to write down their three main points for their research papers and three sources.
    • I spent the class time reviewing one-on-one their topics, main points and sources.
  • Wed: Snow Day!
  • Thursday: Shortened class time due to musical performance during 1st period. I will be introducing students to APA citations.
  • Friday: I decided to give them a little break from senior project and we looked at the origins of fairy tales. We began a small project called “Fracturing” Fairy Tales. This is where one retells a fairy tale from a different perspective. Studetns really enjoyed this – ask them about the original Cinderella.

English 9:

  • Monday: Finished book report presentations.
  • Tuesday: Research day with Mrs. Seaman, Mrs. Hoag and myself. This class time was spent researching sources for their history research projects.
    • Here is the rubric for the history research paper.

Oral Communication (OCU):

  • Monday: we reviewed transcripts of speeches that needed work and some that were written well. Students reviewed each speech and highlighted any changes that were needed. We also went over APA citation for their senior projects
  • Today: we completed chapter 15 quiz. We began impromptu speeches.
    • Impromptu speeches were a lot of fun today. I gave students a topic and they had 30 seconds to prepare.
  • Wed: we will continue with impromptu speeches
  • Thursday: Continue reviewing citations and proper format for of their senior research papers
  • Friday: Chapter 16

English 12:

  • Monday: We spent class time discussing their senior projects; format, APA citation and narrowing their topics.
    • We still have a few students who need to narrow their topics.
    • Students should be working on their research right now.
  • Tuesday: We began impromptu speeches.
    • Impromptu speeches were a lot of fun today. I give students a topic and they had 30 seconds to prepare.
  • Wed: We will spend time in the library researching with Mrs. Hoag
  • Thursday: Same as above
  • Friday: Detailed lecture over APA Citations

English 9:

  • Monday: We finished reading “Beauty and the Beast” out of our literature books
  • Today: We reviewed the original “Beauty and the Beast” novella from the 1700′s. We also read the original “Cinderella” from Egypt.
    • Students enjoyed hearing the original versions.
    • We discussed how the literature reflected the culture. (we joked that if literature reflected our world we would have zombies and vampires running around).
    • Ask your student how the original “Beauty and the Beast” reflected the culture at that time. Answer: Fairy Tales were originally written for adults. Beauty and the Beast was written to depict the lack of rights women had at the time. Fathers married their daughters off at 15 years old and the girl never knew the man and didn’t know if he would be a “Beauty or a Beast” to her. The author was bringing the employable situation girls were in to light through this novella.
    • Our next spelling list was given out (list 10). Words and definitions are due Friday of this week (march 1st) and our spelling test will be Friday of next week.
  • Wed: We will be going to the library to do research for our history research projects. Ask your student to tell you about their topic idea. Mrs. Seaman met with each student individually to help each one of them narrow their ideas.
  • Thursday: Book report work day!
  • Friday: Book report presentations.

  • As part of the new Ohio Department of Education Common Core Standards we began another information text excercise.

    • After reading the article students completed a “Close Reading” excercise. Most students really dislike reading closely. It requires them to “think” more than they want to. :-)
  • Thursday and Friday we will begin our collaborative research paper. We are working with Mrs. Hoag and Mrs. Seamen to complete a researach paper on the theme: Turning Points in History: People, Ideas and Events.
